Fibromyalgia: How can we help you!

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a very common condition. Many people at one time think his family member or friend could be making this up or “it’s only in one’s head” but the truth is that more than 5 million people are affected by this condition in the United States. Fibromyalgia often occurs along with other conditions, such as other forms of arthritis, Lyme disease, or thyroid problems. It can also develop after a serious injury.

Fibromyalgia-related pain is pain that causes you to ache all over. You may have painful "trigger points," places on your body that hurt no matter what medication you take. here are roughly 20 different kinds of nerve endings in your skin that tell you if something is hot, cold, or painful. These nerve endings convert mechanical, thermal, or chemical energy into electrical signals that convey information to the brain and spinal cord - also known as the central nervous system or CNS. These signals travel to areas of your CNS where you perceive the stimuli as the painful sensations you actually feel - sensations such as searing, burning, pounding, or throbbing.




Fibromyalgia's chronic pain seems unending. The ongoing headaches, neck pain, aching joints, and painful tender points prevent sleep, causing you to awaken frequently at night. The chronic sleep disorder of fibromyalgia results in increased achiness, morning stiffness, and daytime fatigue. While you want to exercise and be active, you may suffer with foot pain, hip pain, knee pain or other painful joints. All of these make it next to impossible to exercise with friends or to play with your kids or grandkids.

Water exercise - aka, water aerobics - is the easiest workout for people with fibromyalgia pain.

"If you can't exercise because of obesity, water therapy is a good place to start," Cope says. "Warm water can be very comforting. The exercise gets blood flow to muscles and tendons. And if you're in the water, your joints are not being stressed during exercise." Also, water offers resistance, which helps muscles get stronger.




You don’t need to know how to swim for a water exercise class. In some classes, you work out in shallow water with your head completely above water. In other water aerobic classes, you bob in deep water (with foam belt or life jacket).

The natural buoyancy of water helps you move - so you can do exercises that would otherwise be painful. These exercises can be done with an instructor or physical therapist in a heated facility or in a backyard pool.

Studies from Spain indicate that water aerobics improves quality of life for women with fibromyalgia pain in the long-term. In one 12-week study, women who exercised in warm water - for 60 minutes, 3 times a week - reported improved physical and mental well-being. They also had less fibromyalgia pain and more vitality. As for their state of mind, they reported feeling less depressed, and more sociable.




"If we can get people to swim, do water aerobics, walk up stairs - something that increases pulse rate, it will help a lot with their pain," Cope says. "We're talking 20 minutes, four times a week. That's all. It can make a big difference."
